One plate at a time.

The map is sixteen black plates, each sixteen dots across. Fill one, join it to the next, and India grows across the floor.

  1. Fill a plate.

Follow the plan and press the dots on, one stud at a time.

  2. Join it to the next.

Two pins hold each plate to its neighbour.

  3. Frame it and hang it.

A built frame and two hangers are part of the set.

India never changes.
The sea is yours.

Outside India, every dot is flat and lifts off again. Start from kolam rings, leheriya waves or a night sea, then add your own boats, fish and stars.

Twelve marker pins are in the box too, for the places that are yours.

Seven rivers, one verse.

An old bathing verse calls seven rivers into a handful of water. Six are on your map; the Brahmaputra takes the place of the Saraswati, believed to have dried up long ago.

  • Ganga
  • Yamuna
  • Indus
  • Narmada
  • Godavari
  • Kaveri
  • Brahmaputra

The rivers go on last: 109 blue tiles, laid on top of the finished states.

The boundary of India is shown as depicted by the Survey of India. The map is a simplified mosaic and is not for navigation or legal use. Rivers are shown inside India only. Outside India the colours show height and depth; no other boundaries are drawn. The photographs on this page are imagined scenes; the map shown in them is the Taksh set.
